False Testimony

YOU SHALL NOT GIVE FALSE TESTIMONY (Exodus 20:16).  This commandment protects our neighbor’s reputation. “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches” (Proverbs 22:1).  It seems that this commandment is suspended in the minds of politicians over against their opponents. News reporting deceptively designed to make others appear radical, unkind, and uncaring break this commandment.  When we put words into peoples’ mouths which they did not say, or accuse them of beliefs that they do not hold, the usual desired result is to destroy their credibility, their reputation.

Lying, misrepresentation, deception is the work of the devil, who “was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.  When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is liar and the father of it” (John 8:44).  To be allied with the devil is to receive his condemnation, “everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41).

To a people accustomed to hearing lies and telling lies God says, “Let them return to the Lord and He will have mercy, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon” (Isaiah 55:7.)  Our Lord Jesus invites, “If you continue in My Word, you shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).  Come to Peace Lutheran Church to learn of Him in whom all Truth (John  14:6) centers.  Sunday service time is 9:00 a.m.  Wednesday Lenten service is at 7:00 p.m.
